IN CHARACTER
Character Name: Syenite Orogene Meov (Syen). In Syen's world, people identify themselves by a first name, their 'use' name (their role in society), and then the name of the Comm that they live in.
Canon: The Broken Earth trilogy.
Canon Point: After the end of the first book, 'The Fifth Season'.
In-Game Tattoo Placement: This, on the back of her left calf.
Current Health/Status: Physically, she's fine. Sure, she just ripped apart the world with a great burst of power born of anger and grief, but she's totally fine.
Age: Thirty-two.
Species: Orogene. She's a human, but she possess power that allows her to manipulate the earth with heat and kinetic energy. Most people in her world believe that one isn't human at all if they have this power. Syen isn't sure where she stands on the matter any more.
Content Warnings: Child abuse (both mental and physical), forced pregnancy, body horror, death, child murder.
History: Here.
Personality: As a child, Syenite was proud, and hardworking. Though she wasn't excited to be taken away from her family and brought to the Fulcrum in order to learn how to hone her abilities, she quickly decides that she likes learning, and practicing her powers of orogeny. She is attentive in her lessons, and admired by those that teach her, as she is very competent. However, she is lonely, and does not make friends easily. She was given up by her family, and her Guardian (the person assigned to Syenite and made responsible for her training) physically hurts her underneath the guise of love and care. She keeps to herself, and rarely speaks to other people; but she is curious, and likes to explore everywhere that she goes, and that is how she spends the bulk of her free time.
When passes her first ring test and decides to take the name Syenite (a stone that becomes stronger under heat and pressure, rather than breaking), her ambition does not waver. Syen is always very aware of her place in the Fulcrum, and hyper-vigilant to outward appearances, and the role that she places. She is very obsessed with how others in positions of power see her, and is always thinking about how she can rise up the ranks, and get more and more rings. She is frequently frustrated by the lack of recognition of her abilities that others give her, and becomes insulted easily if people try to downplay her skills and achievements. She is always looking for ways to prove herself, and grows irritated easily by the limits of her orogeny.
Also she's spiky, and doesn't play well with others. Despite the fact that she's put on a mission with Alabaster, a ten-ringer who could more than easily kill her (and threatens to do so a couple of times), she has no qualms with constantly antagonising him and making her hatred of him abundantly clear. She is endlessly sarcastic, and delights in being so. If she dislikes something, she has no problem with voicing it, and she does so with regularity. Once she's outside of the Fulcrum, the diplomacy sloughs off pretty quick, and she's notably foul-mouthed and even arrogant.
Despite this, she's loyal to no end once she's decided that she cares for you. Syenite has something of a mother bear personality; threaten her people? You're in for a world of hurt. Though she has a very strange relationship with Alabaster- more than friends, less than lovers- she does care deeply for him, in a way she can't quite admit to anybody, let alone herself. Syen regularly does not let herself feel emotions deeply, and guards herself from any emotional reactions she knows might hurt her. She's spent her life learning how to react to unexpected blows in safe ways, so even if something affects her deeply, she is very good at pretending that it didn't. She even softens her emotions, reducing them down drastically and breaking them into manageable pieces. For example, she doesn't outright say that she loves her son, Coru, merely that she feels a sense of accomplishment at having produced him, that she marvels at his existence. Upon further introspection, she supposes that she does love him, though not enough to want to spend every minute of the day with him.
She has a displaced sense of worth. She knows that she has to be there for people, and that sometimes her skill with orogeny is required, and that she can help people and make them happy. She seldom asks for anything in return. She remarks a few times that nobody looks out for her. Nobody comforts her. She does her duty, and that is expected of her, but she is used to getting nothing in return. She is only just coming around to thinking of herself as human. It wasn't long ago that she lived at the Fulcrum, and was taught to be a weapon, and a tool of the state, not a child. "The Fulcrum is not a school. Grits are not students. Orogenes are not people." Syenite has long since internalised this harmful rhetoric, and it frequently influences the way that she treats herself.
Abilities/Powers/Weaknesses & Warping: Syenite's power is that of orogeny: the ability to control energy, particularly that of the ground (directly) and temperature (indirectly). She can cause and prevent earthquakes, and when angered can unintentionally kill living things in her "torus", or area of influence, by stealing the heat from bodies to use as energy to manipulate the ground. If Syenite spins a torus that is too wide, and living things are caught up in it, she can flash-freeze them solid.
Referencing the general magic section of the warping page, Syenite is going to find that she's not as strong as she's used to being in Deerington, and that her orogeny is a bit... faulty (ha ha), and doesn't work as it usually should. She's going to have difficulty pulling heat from other sources, and might even find it easier to pull cold energy instead (and anything caught in her torus will, subsequently, burn to a crisp), though that is going to take it a while for her to figure out. If she does manage to fight through all of this and cause any earthquakes, they will be limited to only a mile around her.
Inventory: 01: Six rings. Four are from the Fulcrum, bands of carnelian, white opal, gold, onyx. The other two were a gift from Alabaster that she refused, but she wakes up to find them on her thumbs anyway. They are made of jade, and mother-of-pearl, 02: A Fulcrum standard uniform, all black, that buttons up to her chin, 03: A standard glassknife, nothing over-the-top.
Writing Samples: One and two.

Are you comfortable with prominent elements of fourth-walling?: Sure am
What themes of horror/psychological thrillers do you enjoy the most?: Something I super dig about horror films are the 'final girl' aspect; the girl who lives right to the end, the girl that you end up rooting for. It's cool to see the final girl starting to break the mold of kinda... 80s/90s slasher films too, and start to become a role rather than a set archetype with a bog standard look. I like looking out for who is gonna be the final girl and rooting for her to make it.
Is there anything in particular you absolutely need specific content warnings for?: Sexual violence.
Additional Information: Nothing that comes to mind.
